Sleep is one of the most important things that the body needs during pregnancy and this is very normal because of the symptoms of fatigue and stress experienced by pregnant women. However, a large proportion of pregnant women may not realize that some sleeping situations may harm the fetus from here and avoid them and adopt the correct position


What are the problems of sleeping in a pregnant woman?

A woman's body undergoes a series of physical and hormonal changes during pregnancy, which greatly affects sleep habits. Causes of discomfort may include:

- Increase the size of the abdomen: especially with the progress of pregnancy where women find it difficult to sleep on her stomach.

- Pain in the back: The woman feels pain in the back especially the lower back during pregnancy due to increased weight of her stomach, which prevents her from sleeping on her back.

- Burning of the stomach: Pregnant suffers from the problem of the rise of the contents of the stomach and juice to the esophagus, which causes burning, especially when the expansion.

Shortness of breath: Because of the increase in the size of the uterus, which will press the chest and lungs and difficult to breathe, especially during sleep.

- Insomnia: because of anxiety and fear of birth and thinking too much about it is difficult to sleep.

What sleep situations should a pregnant woman avoid?

Sleeping on the back

After completing the fifth month, the pregnant woman should not sleep on her back due to the increased size of her abdomen. When a pregnant woman sleeps on her back, she contributes to pressure on her intestines which may cause other health problems to block blood flow from the heart to the feet. Sleeping on the back would also cause problems such as high blood pressure, low blood pressure, kidney problems and also may lead to varicose veins, hemorrhoids and edema.



Sleep on the stomach

Sleeping on the stomach is very dangerous during pregnancy because the mother takes her whole weight on her baby and also leads to uterine damage. Sleeping on the stomach may also cause damage to the breasts.



What is the correct sleep position during pregnancy?

Sleeping on one side is the recommended position during pregnancy, especially on the left side. In the human body, the liver is located on the right side of the abdomen, and when the pregnant woman is on the left side, the uterus is away from the liver.

Another advantage of sleep on the left side is that it helps to improve the blood circulation of blood easily to the heart, kidneys, uterus and fetus.
